Chinese Movie Night

Film Red Awn (Hongse Kangbaiyin, 2007)

Time and Location: 19:30-21:15, Cinema "Ksuns", Elizabetes Street 83/85

Drama, road movie, China, 105 min
Director: Cai Shangjun
Trailer here
English subtitles, Latvian in headphones if needed

Film reviews:

"Centers on the conflict and reconciliation between a father and son. The father, Soonghai, abandoned his family to go to the city, only to return 5 years later. His son Yongtao, now 17 years old, refuses to accept him back. However, while harvesting rice together with a rented red combine, Yongtao slowly opens his heart to him. Then he learns the real reason why his father left and comes to understand him, even though it is still difficult to share his inner thoughts. Understanding his father is also a process of growing up for Yongtao. Sometimes, time resolves human relationships. "

(Baseline StudioSystems)

"The original Chinese title refers to the red combine harvester that plays a central role in the story. It is a kind of a road movie about a father and son who travel around for hire to harvest wheat with a friend's harvester. "

(Harri Römpötti, Finnish freelance journalist)

"While focusing on the almost monosyllabic relationship between father and son, where expressions and gestures are far more eloquent than any dialogue, Cai also explores themes such as coming-of-age and teen rebellion as well as the fierce competition between workers in a new world of private enterprise and the migration from countryside to town leaving a landscape of ghost villages. Already established as a highly successful screenwriter, Cai Shangjun steps behind the camera for the first time with a film whose theme - a father-son relationship - has informed his previous work. It stylistically recall Italian neo-realist films such as Bicycle Thieves (Vittorio De Sica, 1948)."

Café and Games

Time and Location: 21:15-23:00, "Andaluzijas Suns" café, Elizabetes Street 83/85

You are invited for a glass of wine to discuss the film to the lovely Andaluzijas Suns café (Elizabetes iela 83/85, in the same building as the Ksuns cinema). Alternatively/additionally, ancient Chinese (Majiang, Weiqi, Xianqi) games will be offered for everyone to play.

Ancient Chinese board-game short description:

(games will be offered for everyone to play, rules will be explained.)

Majiang, (麻將, májiàng)

is an ancient four-player game that originated in China. Majiang requires skill, intelligence, calculation and, like other gambling games, a certain amount of luck. Though rules differ depending on regional variations, the overall aim of the game is to amass a greater score than the other players.

Go game, (围棋, wéiqí),

is an ancient board game for two players that is noted for being rich in strategy despite its simple rules. The game is played by two players who alternately place black and white stones on the vacant intersections of a grid of 19×19 lines. Once placed on the board, stones cannot be moved elsewhere, unless they are surrounded and captured by the opponent's stones. The object of the game is to control (surround) a larger portion of the board than the opponent.
